David Lee Roth was on Leno last night with a bluegrass band. His voice sounds strong. Eddie needs to get his act together and the classic VH needs to tour before it is too late. I mean lets face IT...50 is the new 40... and I think these guys can still do it and do it right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9TlsVXnBn0I saw Roth a few years back at the Beacon here in NY and he was really good. His short lived radio show wasn't my favorite but his music will always be close to my heart. If you don't own the 1st Van Halen album... buy it right now: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1102436&style=music&cart=349961501&BAB=M&frm=lk_tmpodcastI haven't seen Saxon play live since 1984. Hush Puppies and Hot Dogs - great heart-attack food - eat there when you are in NY. DevilDriver will be the opening band on the Venom tour here in the US. I hope to go to the NYC show in Aug. at Iriving Plaza. Keep in mind that most people are idiots. Nobody believes the official spokesman... but everybody trusts an unidentified source. - Ron Nesen We are going to be posting a bunch of podcasts over the next month... 2 or 3 a week. Random Fact: When I saw Motley Crue at the Aragon Ballroom in 1984 (with Saxon) they played the entire Shout at the Devil album except the song "Danger". ---- http://www.aragon.com/I am producing and writing promos for a show called Eureka. It starts airing on Sci Fi on July 18th. Tonight I plan to do wash and watch VH1 Rock Honors. Supposedly http://www.vh1.com is going to post some Talking Metal video podcasts. | | Friday, May 26th, 2006 | | 1:50 pm |
Big Names
The following people will be guests on upcoming episodes of Talking Metal - it is 100%!!!!! We have alreday recorded the interviews with them. John 5 Vince Neil Gilby Clark KK Downing Ian Hill Joe Elliot Dave Grohl Casey Chaos Rob Zombie Paul DiAnno Bullet For My Valentine Sam Dunn and Lizzy Borden - he is back!!!! - www.lizzyborden.com Talking Metal needs sponsors!!!! help! My Top 5 Metal songs... 1. "Fade To Black" - Metallica "Ride the Lightening" was a ground breaking record that became a blue print for the perfect thrash album: start the album with a soft sounding classical intro that evolves into complete thrash chaos, and end side 1 with a song that resembles "Fade to Black." 2. "Welcome to the Jungle" - Guns N Roses From the very first note of Slash’s descending pentatonic scale soaked in delay you are hooked. A true masterpiece that makes every kid from the cornfields to the suburbs of middle America want to hop the next bus to Hollywood and embrace L.A.’s dark side. 3. "Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown)" - Judas Priest Who would have guessed that one of the greatest metal songs of all time is actually a Fleetwood Mac song? Shortly before Peter Green left Fleetwood Mac and shortly after he lost his mind he wrote this song. Judas Priest took an already well-crafted song and made it into a masterpiece. 4. "Snowblind" - Black Sabbath The best song off one of the best albums ever made. A tribute to the band’s drug of choice. Ozzy’s vocals cuts through this tune like a razor blade. Sabbath at their best. 5. "Power and the Glory" - Saxon The title cut off Saxon’s best album. Saxon is a band that never received as much success as their NWOBHM brothers Def Leppard and Iron Maiden, but they should have. If you don’t know Biff Byford, you don’t know metal. Wrap it up - GnR
It has now been almost a week now since the last of the 4 sold out shows by Guns N Roses in NYC and the high that they gave this city still remains strong. I was at 3 of the 4 shows and each one had a slightly different vibe. 5/12/06 - This was Guns N Roses first show in over 3.5 years. Bumblefoot was unveiled as the new 3rd guitarist. Bumblefoot is someone I knew from the old daze. I even once hooked Bumblefoot up for a jam with my drummer friend, Mike Lincoln. (Mike currently plays drums in Ostronomy and Killer Mink) Axl now has 2 hometown heroes from NY in the band, Bumble and 4tus. Richard Fortus is a player I used to see play the clubs with bands such as Honky Toast. Richard sounded great at this show. The energy of the crowd seemed to fuel both he and Robin big time. Axl's voice sounded amazing during this show. For more insight into this show check out my texting to Antimusic that took place live here - http://www.antimusic.com/dayinrock/gnr/5/14/06 - I was not at that show but I heard that it went really well. 5/15/06 - I really dug this Monday night show. The band felt like a well-oiled machine. Once again, Axl voice sounded amazing and strong. The band shinned with cool solos by Dizzy, Bumblefoot, Robin and Richard. Dizzy did a killer cover of "Something" by the Beatles. Robin and 4tus did a great duet, covering the song, "Beautiful." Bumble sounded great and seemed more comfortable on stage then he did on Friday. This band looked, felt and sounded like they were weeks into a tour not just 2 days. One of the tightest performances I have ever seen this band deliver. 5/17/06 - This show felt like a big party! They took the stage slightly later then they did on the other nights. Axl brought out Izzy for some of the songs. The place went nuts for Izzy. Kid Rock was also a special guest at this show. Mr. Bach, once again, joined them for My Michelle." Axl thanked everyone from his management team to the staff at his hotel to the people of NY. I have never been to a concert that felt like such a party. 5/18/06 - There was a private acoustic show at Plumm. I was not at this show and I would like to hear more about the performance and setlist. Is it true they covered 'Take Your Whiskey Home" by VH?? I am a little sick of hearing about the scuffle... although, the cover picture on the NY Post cracked me up big time. It is time for everyone to accept the new line-up that is GnR. This is a great band. Guns N Roses have had an incredible past and I can now honestly tell you, that they are set for an amazing future. Congrats to Tommy, Axl, Bumblefoot, Finck, 4tus, Chris, Brain and Dizzy. Europe, please brace yourself for what is about to happen- Guns N Roses are back and in top form! 7 Albums
I really can't stop listening to these 7 albums. I suggest you get them. "Perfect Pitch Black" - Cave In "10,000 Days" - Tool "All Hail" - Kill Cheerleader "Fishscale" - Ghostface Killah "Doomsday Machine" - Arch Enemy "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw" - Pelican "Roll The Bones" - Rush - old but good! John flew out to Vegas today. He is getting some interviews out there for the podcast. Stayed Tuned to http://www.talkingmetal.com for more details. We might plan to move out of the urban setting. I really need more room for all my crap. that Metal Documentary is tonight on VH1. I think it is 4 parts. Maybe I'll watch it. I have a love/hate attitdue towards VH1. Kinda glad I don't work there anymore. I finally listened to the Thraxcast. They talk about Battlestar - very cool. Anthrax rule. I am trying to decide if I am going to go to Ozzfest. Not sure? I am really sick of everyone today. Bad mood. Please don't bother me. Current Mood: blahCurrent Music: Body Talk - Ratt | | Friday, May 19th, 2006 | | 11:31 am |
New Maiden and GnR stuff
I am getting really excited for a few new albums - Iron Maiden and Metallica. I heard they will be mastering the new Maiden here in NY starting next week. Also - waz' up with the new Paul Stanley solo album. It features John 5 on guitar. They need to release it... it has been done for awhile. I wish Ace would return to the Kiss fold. There was a surprise GnR show (acoustic) last night. I didn't hear about it until this morning. Hats off to GnR. I was at 3 of the 4 shows here in NYC - Amazing stuff. One thing I really dug about the shows was that the players in the band really got to shine. Dizzy did a great solo piano perfromance of the Beatles' classic - Something. Poor Sir Paul is about to loose half his money. Bumblefoot did some flashy solo guitar stuff - on one solo he was using what appeared to be a fretless guitar. Fortus sounds great. What soul he has in his playing... AND of course, Robin Finck, man, he is great. The new true "rock star" of the band. At 2 of the shows I was at Fortus and Finck did a duet guitar version of that Linda Perry/Christine Aguilera song called "Beautiful." Next week - Oh my God, we have Mr. Paul DiAnno (Iron Maiden, Battlezone, Killers) on the Talking Metal podcast. I just interviewed Bullet Fof My Valentine and the great Lizzy Borden - we will try to post those real soon. Talking Metal received over 23,000 downloads in 15 days... this little podcast thing is taking. I wish it could pay the bills BUT so far it just makes more bills... sorry, just had to complain a little. We are opening a Talking Metal store on the site this summer - T-shirts, CDs and donnations - hopefully people will show some support. Catch my co-host, John Ostronomy, next week in Vegas covering the Rock Honors awards for VH1 and Talking Metal. Please visit: http://www.talkingmetal.comand http://www.ostronomy.com too my wife's band is http://www.myspace.com/themynks - they play tonight at American Trash bar. Last night
Another great night - May 17th - Guns N Roses. Izzy on stage for 3 songs! Baz and Kid Rock too. More Chaos then the other 2 shows I was at (5/12 & 5/15) AND I mean that as a good thing. What a night! I will remember this shows for the rest of my life. My ears are ringing bad. Emily and I had the best sits in the house - middle VIP lounge right next to the stage. WE NEED CHINESE DEMOCRACY!!!!!!!! Stayed tuned to Talking Metal podcast for a giveaway in The Paul DiAnno episode. Current Mood: crazyCurrent Music: NIGHTRAIN - GNR | | Tuesday, May 16th, 2006 | | 12:04 pm |
Guns concert May 15
Monday night. Guns N Roses took the stage right around 11pm last night. Another excellent show. The set list was slightly different from Friday's show. I thought Bumblefoot seemed a little more comforatable then he did on Friday. Once again, Axl voice stood strong. John will be doing some reporting from the VH1 Rock Honors show out in Vegas. More great episodes coming up on the Talking Metal podcast. | | Saturday, May 13th, 2006 | | 4:26 pm |
Review of Guns N Roses May 12 show
Last night was awesome. Talking Metal started out at Mustang Harry’s on 7thAve around 6:30pm. Guns N Roses fans from all over the country were meeting here for a pre-show drink. We interviewed some of them. I am not sure yet if we will use these interviews for a future podcast. We then headed up 7th Ave, across on 30th and up on 8th Ave to Hammerstein Ballroom. One of the guys we were hanging with is a friend of Baz’s and also some of the Hammerstein staff. This helped Talking Metal avoid the long lines of people waiting to get in. Within minutes, John, Emily, Chris, M, and myself were put on an elevator and taken up to one of the VIP lounges. We had a great view of the stage and enjoyed Bullet For My Valentine’s opening set. Guns N Roses took the stage around 11pm. This was their first show in 3.5 years. The band was the same great lineup as 2002, except now a guy I knew from the NYC/Jersey club scene had replaced Buckethead. His name is Bumblefoot – http://www.bumblefoot.comOnce again, the new 3rd guitarist is Bumblefoot!!! Congratulation to Bumblefoot, From Captain T!!!!! I guess Bumble won’t be playing Images on Fairview Ave in Fairview, NJ anytime soon. Guns N Roses set was amazing. It was about 80% classic material and 20% new. I have seen Axl perform live numerous times since 1988 and this is the strongest his voice has ever been. At 2 hours into the set the band played “Nightrain” and Axl nailed every note without a problem. His energy was great and non-stop throughout a set that lasted well over 2 hours. I was texting messages to Keavin over at Antimusic.com from my cell as the show was going on. Check them out here: http://www.antimusic.com/dayinrock/gnr/The band felt more like a band then ever before. I was very impressed with Robin Finck. His playing was great and his look was completely different from last time. He looks cool with long hair and a full beard. Richard also played wonderfully and he seemed to have so much confidence. This band is Guns N Roses. Everyone needs to accept this. There is no longer a guy with a top hat on stage and that is okay because this band is on fire. This band is now. The show ended at around 1:15am. We then headed back stage with our friend Chris who is friends with Mr. Bach (by now, I’m sure you all know he joined GnR onstage for “My Michelle”). While backstage I approached Bumblefoot who I haven’t seen for about 5 years. He told me I could play his music on the podcast which is very cool. He has been rehearsing with the band for only a few weeks. We also said hello to Richard and Tommy. Richard was heading straight home from the gig with his family. Then we headed up to John’s office to post a 4 minute post show podcast. From there, we sped uptown to a bar called American Trash to meet some friends for a drink. By the time we got there most of them had left. Dave, the bartender, let us play some GnR on the sound system at Trash. Very cool, Thanks to Dave and Mark from American Trash! We left American Trash at 3:45am and raced downtown to some exclusive after show parties so our friend Chris could meet up with Sebastian. We spent a couple hours drinking, mingling, and talking with various insiders and the rest of the band. Fun times. It has come to my attention that some people think we took things a little too far with our Guns N Roses episodes of Talking Metal. In these episodes, we only meant to poke fun at ourselves for being such fanatical Guns fans. Many elements of these episodes were exaggerated. We did stand outside of Guns N Rose’s management company and ask exiting employees if they had any information on Chinese Democracy. Most of them greeted us with a smile and waved us off. We also entered Sterling Sounds and asked if they were mastering Chinese Democracy and although the receptionist was annoyed for the first 10 seconds of our conversation, she then warmed up to us. Other employees stood to her side laughing at us. We never were stalking Axl. If anything, we are just very excited by the prospect that there is going to be new Guns N Roses material out soon. We, like most of these message board posters, are always hungry for any bit of Guns N Roses news and we decided to kind of make fun of that fact about ourselves. Unfortunately, I will not be at tomorrow’s show. I could not score tickets. I will be at both the Monday and Wednesday show. Last night at 5am, a certain someone told my wife that something special would be going down at the Wednesday show. I can’t wait. Stayed tuned to the Talking Metal podcast for more great interviews – http://www.talkingmetal.com Current Mood: tired | | 3:28 am |
